Specialty Contact Lens Services – Improve Vision, Quality of Life

The cornea is responsible for focusing light that enters the eye. Any irregularity in the cornea can distort vision and result in significant visual impairment.

Specialty Contact Lenses can improve vision and reduce symptoms such as eye pain, dry eye, blurry vision and light sensitivity in patients with distorted corneas.

Conditions that cause distortion include:

Ocular Diseases:
  • Keratoconus
  • Keratoglobus
  • Pellucid Marginal Degeneration
Post Surgery Complications:
  • post-PKP (penetrating keratoplasty)
  • post-RK (radial keratotomy)
  • post-LASIK
Ocular Trauma:
  • Corneal Scarring
  • Recurrent Corneal Erosions
Inherited Diseases:
  • Anterior Basement Membrane Dystrophy
Conditions where the eye needs protection from direct exposure include:
Systemic Diseases:
  • Sjogren’s Syndrome
  • Ocular graft-versus-host disease (GVHD)
  • Dry Eye Syndrome
These medical conditions require much skill in achieving a successful contact lens fit.

Contact Lens Treatment Options

Hybrid Lenses

Hybrid Lenses

A hybrid contact lens is composed of a gas permeable lens in the center surrounded by a soft contact lens. The soft part of the lens improves comfort and helps the lens to center. The gas permeable center maximizes vision. SynergEyes, Inc. is the only FDA-cleared manufacturer of hybrid contact lenses for keratoconus. Their ClearKone lens is designed to fit moderate to advanced keratoconus.

Scleral Lenses

Scleral Lenses

Scleral lenses require very precise and skilled fitting. Scleral lenses are specialized contact lenses used for managing a variety of eye conditions. They are larger than standard gas permeable and soft contact lenses and are designed to rest on the less sensitive, white area of the eye, the sclera. Scleral lenses are fit to vault over the cornea. The vaulted area is filled with preservative free saline which acts as a liquid bandage to help treat diseased corneas or extremely dry eyes. Scleral lenses mask irregularities of the cornea and can dramatically improve vision. It is not uncommon for visually impaired patients to regain near normal vision.

Custom Gas Permeable Lenses

(includes intra-limbal, reverse geometry and mini-scleral designs) are custom designed to manage corneal irregularity or high refractive error. Their smooth, glass-like surface maximizes visual acuity.

Tinted Therapeutic Lenses

are used for corneal scarring, opaque corneas or light sensitivity.

Tinted Therapeutic Lenses

Custom Soft Contact Lenses

are precisely designed and used for pathological myopia, high hyperopia, aphakia and/or high astigmatism.

Specialty Contact Lenses

are custom designed to maximize your vision, improve comfort and protect or improve the health of your eyes. Each lens is unique. Specialty contact lens fitting is a rewarding process. Once complete, many patients report an improvement in their quality of life.
